WHAT IS CONTACT IMPROVISATION DANCE?

HISTORY:

In 1972 developed by Steve Paxton in Usa. In this beginning period Nancy Stark Smith and her friends play a very important role in propagating it. Now there are studio's and festivals all over the world.

CHARACTARISTICS:

This is a style and technique originating in the world of professional modern theater dance theory and practice. So it is based on a profound knowledge about the anatomy of the human body, and how it moves. And when two or more people dance in physical contact with each other, it is based on a study how to support and utilize each other's body weight while in motion. Emphasis is on touching, falling, lifting, leaning, sliding, counter-balancing, and supporting the weight of each other. Ground & gravity is not regarded as something to get away from, like in classical ballet, but as something to accept as a basical force, to use it, as intensive as possible. Because they are one of the most important powers that play a role in movement of the body. Physical contact is essential, but one can also be in touch energetically: visual and aural communication between dancers provide plenty of possibilities. Qualities of sharing, cooperation, egalitarianism, and informality, define social atmosphere amongst performers.

#ROLE OF MUSIC:

The basical form is without music. That is why during class there is usualy no music. Because dancers are trained not to move in a way that mimics the rythm & melody of music. Instead this style of dance is expressed from a personal internal physical and emotional source. But during Jam after class, music is played after all, because that part of the event is less formal. Any kind of music that is quiet, and with a rythm that is not to much dominating. Ones in a while, life musicions playing acoustic instruments, are a welcome change from playing prerecorded music.

#AFTER EVERY CLASS IS A JAM:

Jamming can also be part of the event, usually after class, the teacher is guarding for a safe atmosphere, in which people dance together, like in "Dance Free Events", but in the style of Contact Improvisation Dance.

TIME & PLACE DANCE CLASSES

These classes will be given in a dance studio in Amsterdam. As soon as I have organised time & space, I will put it on this website.

  • PLAN FOR FUTURE
  • After about seven years of giving ordinary CID classes with succes, I will maybe make experiments if it is possible to combine CID with acrobatics & many other different kinds of partner dance styles, & creative body movenment styles.
